What is the purpose of this page? --Sir Brizz 01:18, 31 July 2007 (EDT)

Umm... there's alot of weapons in that list that can't possibly be catagorized as "spammy." I'm not pr0 by any measure, but even I know that a weapon can't qualify as being "spammy" simply because it shoots projectiles. Please correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know, "spammy" weapons are weapons that shoot projectiles in such a way that it is difficult to avoid, especially at close range. "Spam" is also a technique of using spam weapons to one's advantage, as well as firing wildly in the general direction of a target in hopes that a few of the many projectiles will hit. -- BobTheBeheader

The purpose of this page? Isn't it obvious enough? Whenever I write a gametype page, there's always a section about what items you can find, and there are always references to SuperWeapons, "Deathmatch" weapons, and "Onslaught" weapons. I figured there'd be people who didn't know what that meant, so that's how I got the idea for this page... then, when I started writing the page, it seemed like a good place to include a definition of hitscan and spam. All of this page's information is relevant and important. If anyone thinks the page should be renamed, that's your prerogative. --IceCreamYou 14:03, 31 July 2007 (EDT)

I think it makes more sense to define hitscan and projectile weapons on separate pages. That way a separate link for each can be provided for the correct weapon. Super weapons can be defined as projectiles as they are not instant hit and have a blast radius. The "hitspam" stuff isn't what I would call a real category either. There are only two real categories, projectile and hitscan. --DeathBooger 14:35, 31 July 2007 (EDT)

I certainly understand your reasoning for a separate page for Hitscan and Projectile, but I think it's a worthy idea to put them side-by-side for comparison. Also, it allows the inclusion of the "Hitspam" and "Other" categories. To me, the simple fact that some of us feel that those categories are needed is enough for their existence to be justified. The explanations of those categories are phrased openly enough to say, "most people would categorize these weapons as projectile or hitscan, but because of these characteristics others feel that they belong in a category of their own." --IceCreamYou 15:56, 31 July 2007 (EDT)

Hitscan vs Projectile ...

I think weapon like minigun or link gun deserves their own category. You have instantly aim at the opponent instead of simple click (hit-scan) at the enemy or use your prediction (projectile) so you know where will the enemy be in the next moment.

Hitscan and projectile shouldn't always indicate how the gun is used in the games. Both are technical terms. You either code a weapon's fire type to be hitscan or projectile. It has nothing to do with rate of fire or aiming strategy. --DeathBooger 14:55, 31 July 2007 (EDT)

I think that the way a gun must be wielded is the more essential determining factor than the way it was coded, although they're certainly closely related. With weapons like the RL, obviously it's a spam weapon because it shoots rockets which explode. This means that you have to "lead" your opponent to hit him. With weapons like the Sniper rifles, it's a single point-and-click on the spot. With the minigun, you don't have to lead, but you do have to follow the player around with your crosshairs because it's not as simple as a zero extent trace. The minigun shoots projectiles, yes, but they're virtually instant-hit, they're just not particularly accurate. --IceCreamYou 16:01, 31 July 2007 (EDT)

The minigun is a hitscan weapon. It uses traces to determine hits; it doesn't create any Projectile objects. Don't even argue; by your logic, all hitscan weapons are projectile weapons. —Nereid talk 16:17, 31 July 2007 (EDT)
