DOM-Sesmar, one of the Domination maps
Capture and hold control points to win.

Overview

In Domination each team is trying to control and hold the level's control points.

Each team must locate and capture certain points in a Domination map.

Only 2 teams Domination matches are available in the Single Player Ladder. There are at most 4 teams in a Domination game.

Reception

Domination is the only gametype that is unique in Unreal series, appearing only in Unreal Tournament. This gametype was overall received well due to it being a very strategical, team-oriented gametype that required good knowledge of the map and teamwork.

However, players quickly noticed that Domination was more of an avoidance than actually shooting gametype, and therefore in later games Double Domination was included. However, it wasn't nearly as popular as Domination:

Domination is a neat gametype, but it has this major flaw of having to run around like crazy and this takes away from the actual action I think. We tried to fix that with Domination2 in UC and UT2003 by having to hold both domination points for a certain amount of time. But there are still issues...

Due to the unpopularity of Double Domination, Domination from UT was ported to later games by the community and was called Classic Domination.

Basics

HUD

Domination enhances the basic teamplay HUD by adding control point status indicators to the left side of your screen.

  • Each indicator shows the name and the current status of a control point.

Control Points

  • Every control point in a domination map has a unique name.
  • A grey X symbol of a control point indicates that no team is in control of that location.
  • To take control of a location, touch it.
  • Notice that the shape and color of the control point will change to reflect your team symbol and color, the same to the control point status icon on the HUD.
  • A control point will be taken over once it is touched (by other team).

Scoring

  • A team is given 1 point every 5 seconds for each location they control.
  • The more locations a team controls the faster their score increases.
